MATCH REPORT:

Match report for team 1 (from 10th May)

Dear all - a little update.

With Dave Sobo away on business, I had the pleasure for playing for team 1
away at Hart 1. Now Hart have a tradition of being a tough team to beat and
I think they beat twice over in the last winter league.

I was first on playing at number 5 against Ian Smith. I could tell in the
warm up that Ian was technically a better player than me and once the game
was underway I took a 1st game thrashing 9/5. I dug in deeply in the 2nd
knowing that if I lost it there would be no coming back. Fortunately I
sneaked it 9/7 to level but then was destroyed in the 3rd. I dug deep and
raised my game as best I could and I'm still not sure how I managed it but
won games 4 and 5 by 9/5 9/4. I came of court extremely knackered but
delighted as I won the string against a far better player than me. One up
for the Bracknell boys!

At the same time, Terry playing at 3 was also having a 5 set battle.
Unfortunately I didn't see any of it but although he told me he played well,
he lost in the 5th game to make it one string all. Next on was Jim at 2 and
John Batten at 4. I saw a bit of John's game and he came up against a very
useful Mat Heritage who blew John away rather quickly in 3 games. (must stop
having your holidays John!)We are now 2-1 strings down at this point.
On the other court Jim was playing James Woodmill who in a previous match
had blown Jimmy away 3-0. Now James (not Jim) is a good player! Very
athletic, has an amazing stretch and extreme quality of shot. Now our Jimmy
was going to have his work cut out here if we were to level the match.
Fortunately Jimmy started well and took the 1st game 9/4. He then became
confident and therefore tinned a few and lost the 2nd 9/6. The 3rd game was
key here, Jim ran and ran, played the right drops at the right time and took
this game 9/2. He then stormed into a 7-0 lead in the 4th and was 2 points
away from a memorable victory. Jim then decided to serve out, gave James the
initiative and he duly clawed his way back into the game and at one point
got to a 8-7 lead! At this point I was convinced it was going to go to a 5th
game and with Jimmy looking tired, the signs were not good. Jimmy managed to
win his serve back and played a delightful drop to level the score at 8-8.
He kept his cool and managed to serve out taking the 4th game by 10/8. A
fantastic win again against a player that looked far superior!

We are now at 2-2 with Brian coming up against the very useful Chris Locks.
I was told that Dave S had previously beaten Chris so I was hoping that
Brian could tire the guy down and do something similar. Unfortunately with
Brian not playing at his best and with Chris on home soil, Brian put up a
gallant fight but was taken out in 3 games.

Therefore the Bracknell boys lost 3-2 on the night and we all left thinking
what might have been if Mr Sobo had been available - hurry back home Dave,
we need you for the 24th. The overall points tally was 17 - 8. I am
confident if we have a full team out, we can beat them on the return leg at
our place.

The scores for the website are -

Chris Locks v Brian 9/5, 9/2, 9/5 = 3-0.
James Woodmall v Jim 4/9, 9/6, 2/9, 8/10 = 1-3.
Pete Walker v Terry 8/10, 9/4, 8/10, 9/3, 9/3 = 3-2.
Mat Heritage v John Batten 9/2, 9/2, 9/4 = 3-0.
Ian Smith v Dave T 9/5, 7/9, 9/1, 5/9, 4/9 = 2-3.

Joint men of the match go to Jimmy and me - we both showed that you don't
have to look good or even be that good to still win a game - hooray!

Until the next time, DT x.
